As much a philosophical essay as it is a memoir, this little book will be of interest not only to performers of early music, but to music-lovers in general, and to all who take an interest in the modern cultural scene. Daniel Waitzman, a Concert Artists Guild Award-winner and recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship Award, and author of The Art of Playing the Recorder, relates the development of his views on early music performance and his gradual appreciation of the distinction between historical and musical authenticity in performance. He offers a trenchant critique of the modern early-music movement, based on his experiences as a soloist on flute, Baroque flute, conical Boehm flute, and recorder, and on his work as a composer, teacher, and observer of the musical scene. Mr. Waitzman's views reflect a deep concern for the philosophical and historical aspects of the subject, and for the future of classical music in general. He calls for the reform not only of early music performance, but of contemporary composition as well. Mr. Waitzman's advocates a return to the old masters' untrammeled approach to both musical performance and musical composition. This book is an expanded and revised version of an essay, written at the behest of Rosalyn Tureck, that formed the subject of a feature article by Donal Henahan in The New York Times on July 22, 1990. Also included are the text of a letter by Mr. Waitzman to a music student, illustrating his ideas in practical application, along with a short essay on a well-known early 18th-century painting showing a Baroque flute with extra tone-holes. Mr. Waitzman has received widespread acclaim for his performances and recordings on flutes and recorders. He has received several ASCAP awards for his musical compositions, some of which have been premiered by harpsichordist Gerald Ranck, violist Louise Schulman, and by the late flutist and Music Director of The Bach Aria Group, Samuel Baron. His compositions include a harpsichord concerto, a string symphony, sonatas for flute, violin, viola, and cello, a string quartet, and numerous other chamber music works.
